Monae, What a great industry to get involved in. There are so so so many areas and career paths here. Designing clothes, designing accessories, being a buyer for a fashion house or a department store. The list is endless. I second Randi's response community colleges are a great lower cost way to get your foot in the door if you want to be a designer. Otherwise look for an apprenticeship with a fashion house. Everybody starts somewhere and do the day job to get you by as you design your first collection.

Unbelievable industry to be in! Be ready to work and put your time in, but that will be the most valuable learning experience. Worked as a merchandiser in NYC for 10 years and my start at entry-level was tidying up the showroom, running errands, and anything else that was needed. This opened doors and gave me the exposure to advance in this competitive industry.
If looking to design, you want to look at fashion schools, for example, FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) or a college that offers design as part of their curriculum. Many Community Colleges offer these classes as well at a fraction of the cost and a great place to start without an overwhelming amount of school loans.
I hope this helps anyone looking for an exciting career in the Fashion Industry.
Build you experience in a retail store or look for opportunities working in a design studio
Get educated. See what type of education institution best for you and your budget.
Look for a summer internship to build experience as well as building connections within the industry.

Hey Monae! I run a print-on-demand clothing shop through Etsy as one of y many side-hustles and that can be a great option to start learning design skills, business/marketing skills and so much more which will come in handy once you get a little further along in your career! Plus, with print-on-demand, there is no start-up cost, no inventory to manage and it's a great way to make a little extra cash! Below are the steps I took to get started.
Open an account with a print-on-demand company such Printful or Printify and pick a product you'll focus on (maybe a line of leggings or hats?)
Get familiar with Canva and watch YouTube videos on how to design for Tshirts or "all-over-prints" for print-on-demand
Order samples of the products, take photos for marketing, name your business and create your logo/branding.
Open an Etsy store or your own website. Open social channels to share your creations with your network.
Start loading up designs / product listings and get to work selling!
