One of my best friends is an anesthesiologist, and her most difficult stories deal with running codes on dying patients. However, it is also possible to tailor your practice towards working on healthier, younger patients.

Hello!
Some of the challenges facing anesthesiologists may be the following:
- The uncertain future of Medicare: The cost of Medicare tops the list of challenges for anesthesiologists over the next few years. While physicians are responsible for making decisions that impact cost, physician fees are not driving Medicare costs as much as the procedures and the number of patients covered by the plan compared to those paying into Medicare.
- Continuing drug shortages: A recent survey by the American Hospital Association found that 99.5 percent of hospitals are experiencing at least one drug shortage, mirroring survey data presented by the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
- Debate over scope of practice issues: Anesthesiologists are plagued by several scope of practice issues, including the ability of certified registered nurse anesthetists to practice pain medicine and provide anesthesia without physician supervision.
- Transition to a global payment model: Payment models will inevitably shift from a base-plus-time approach to a capped model. The timeline for this is uncertain, but because of this impending shift, anesthesiologists must assist facilities in the coordination and management of patients' preoperative care before, during and after surgery.
- Shortage of specialists: Specialty organizations need to make headway in explaining why the United States needs more specialists.
Hope this helps!
