Hi Dariana!

You asked about a very important and interesting area! Here are sites that will provide some very helpful information:

Finding an appropriate career area is like buying a pair of shoes. They may look great, but you need to try them on and walk in them for a while to determine fit and comfort.

Best of luck! Please keep me posted. I would like to follow your progress!

Bethany’s Answer

Hi Dariana! I studied biochemistry in college and worked in research for a while, so I can help. All you need to get started is a 4-year college degree. After that, you will have no problem finding a biochemist job. Later on, you may want to get a Master's degree or PhD, but it is not required. The main reason why you would go to school for more than 4 years is if you want to specialize in a particular subject (for example, if you want to study genetics, which is related to biochemistry but is more advanced).

I would highly recommend getting a biochemistry student research job while you are a college student. That will make it easy for you to get a job after graduation. Most colleges have lots of research labs that are always looking for student workers. Ask about student research opportunities when you are looking at colleges and doing college visits. Then when you start college, talk to your advisor/career counselor about student research opportunities. Some colleges even offer high school research jobs that you could do during the summer before going to college.
