Which college major would set me up best for a career in community management?

When you are looking at resumes to select for a community management role, which degrees are most common in the resume stack? Which are best? Should I major in marketing or english or business or communications or sociology or something else? How much does it matter? I’m interested less in what is “needed" than what makes me best positioned. Jobs are hard to come by!

Community management requires strong writing and interpersonal skills, and, depending on the needs of your community, can involve graphic design, social media, data analysis, public relations, and consumer marketing.

I'd recommend exploring majors under a Communications umbrella with focus on digital comms.

Personally, I have a Bachelor of Science in Communications degree, but my major was Audio Production, minor is Music. And I've hired people with degrees such as English, Marketing, IT, and even hired great community managers with no degree at all. The skills are often more important than the exact major in Community work.

Good luck!
