What should I do in high school to eventually become a medical professional (specifically a dermatologist)?

I am 16 and will enter 11th grade in the fall. I recently discovered my dream to become a dermatologist and I understand this is an extremely coveted position. Are there any programs or extracurriculars that would demonstrate my dedication to this particular position as a high school #medicine #doctor #medical-school student?

Shivani’s Answer

Hi! Firstly you have to focus on your MCAT scores which will help you get selected into a med school. Once med school is done you have to give the USMLE and get a competitive percentile in order to get a dermatology residency in the college of your choice

Shivani recommends the following next steps:

Choose Biology with other sciences
Study for MCAT
Enroll into Med School
Give the USMLE steps 1 2 3
Enroll into residency

April’s Answer

This is a good question. I would say you can do a few things. One is focus on making sure you have the grades that reflect your determination. A good GPA for college is a base. It is not everything, but it is a good starting point. Two, you can get involved in activities that demonstrate your interest in the medical field. This may be volunteering at a clinic or hospital, volunteering at health fairs, or even joining a health-related student group at your school. When you get to college, continue to follow these steps: good grades and a good science GPA, good MCAT, and good extracurricular activities. As a college student, you’ll have access to more health-related opportunities and events such as leadership positions in campus groups, internships, and research. Keep in mind, do not get caught up in just doing random activities you don’t even like just to add it to your resume/med school application. You want to focus on quality, not quantity. Society needs doctors that are compassionate and ethical, not machines. So focus on having activities and experiences that are both meaningful and relevant to your future career as a doctor. This will show consistency and dedication to the health field.

April recommends the following next steps:

Volunteer at a local clinic or hospital
Look into health organizations that you can join
Get into College
Continue steps 1 and 2, and also look into research opportunities
