What classes should I take to be a fashion designer?

I like to draw in my free time #fashion #art

Thank you comment icon Parsons School of Design and FIT NYC have excellent degree programs for fashion design. Search these programs to see the suggested and required classes to take and start from there. These schools offer classes in the summer for students in high school where you can gain hands on experience. Michelle Upton

you should talk to your school counselor on the classes available in the school. Since different universities may have slightly different programs, make an appointment with an advisor in the university you are planning to attend to see the programs they have related to fashion designing.
There is Colleges of Fashion Designing like NIFT, Academy of Art University etc. But to attend any of these universities, you have take an aptitude entrance , so make sure you are prepped up for subjects other than fashion designer.

It is a special talent to be able to sketch, draw or paint so you may very well do fine as a fashion designer.

Once you are enrolled in fashion school, you will probabaly take courses in fashion design - sketching. You will also learn how to design your own textiles. You will be on a sewing machine a lot, so it may be helpful if you already know how to sew. There will probably be some courses in marketing, too.

Although it is a highly competitive field, once you have completed your studies and gained a couple of lines of clothing, you can even go into your own business. School will be very important for this. Not only will you meet people in the industry through school, but they will teach you the ins and outs of everything you need to know. One thing is for sure: you're in the best city to study fashion - New York City. That is a great start.

Keep in mind that any work in the fashion industry is very competitive, very time demanding and takes a while to build up a viable line. If you can think beyond liking to draw, you will go far in the field because it takes a lot to produce the product and much savvy with communication and long hours at a sewing machine.

It's wonderful to think that you will be among today's new fashion designers ! Best wishes to you !
