I took some biology classes in college and I think one things to do is to pay attention in class, take notes, and create study materials as you go. Lots of biology is memorization so I’ve found quizlet and notecards are very helpful. Also study with friends or teach your friends a concept. If your able to teach it then you probably know it pretty well. That was something that helped me allot. It also depends on your learning style so take on online learning type quiz and see what they tell you to do to study best! Good luck!

Depending upon your learning style, you will benefit greatly from using study skills that are tailored to how you learn. For example if you learn better with oral discussion and visual presentations that help to connect to the topic, then group study sessions and flash cards will be best for your studying. I have also heard that games are a new learning method, creating tasks and achieving badge points for correct answers, so this could be a great option to pursue as well with your study group but would take work on your part to create the 'rules'. Jeopardy may be an easier way to create a game! Other learning styles and strategies can be found online here: https://quizlet.com/ . Also make sure you take advantage of your academic advisors at your college as they are the best resource to help you in your specific biology courses. Good luck to you in your future endeavors!

Thank you comment icon Thank you! Those methods all got me to where I am today, but as I'm taking these upper levels, I've found that each class requires its own set of study skills. I'm a very visual person, and I love making figures and tables if at all possible, as well as drawings. My ecology class, I can just look off the notes and I'm fine, Developmental Bio is much harder, as there are many molecular processes which I do not understand. I excelled in Genetics, but this goes further in depth, and I don't understand the molecular aspects of biology whatsoever. I can memorize Step-by-Step processes, especially if I have pictures with them. However, when it comes to knowing small details, I suffer. Caroline
Thank you comment icon Have you been involved in group study sessions? Perhaps you can gain great insight with your fellow Developmental Bio classmates on what works for them in how to remember the details. What has your academic advisor suggested? What helped me in college was coming up with unique sentences for specific acronyms for processes, not sure if this would help in your case related to details- such as DABDA- Denial Anger Bargaining Depression Acceptance- can be the phrase "Dad And Barb Don't Act". And truly, ask your classmates, professor, and academic advisor for support before things can get overwhelming in the class. Jyoti Rao, MS, CMS
