Some people have careers, but most people just have jobs. I've been working as a software engineer for over 30 years. Whether I have a job or a career is subject to debate. Whichever you have, I think it's important to enjoy your work since most people spend the majority of their waking life doing work. It's also important, in my opinion, to have a good work life balance. Whether a career is important for your life is an individual decision. If you value career over personal pursuits, then a career is very important for your life.

Thank you for your questions. A career is important to us but it is not the entire part of our life.
Usually, people would spend 8 - 10 hours on working daily and 5 - 6 days a week. You can imagine that it occupies about 1/3 of our time in working. On the other hand, we need to earn monies to support our own and family living. Therefore, I would say it is important to choose a career that is suitable to you and you have interest on. You can also have a sense of achievement and satisfaction in your working life.
Having said that, there are also other important things in our life, e.g. our health, family, friends, etc. You have also have your own hobbies. All of these do not have substitute. Other than working, you also need to spend some quality time on these things.
Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Hi Moe Sanda S. Thanks so much for your thoughtful question. This question on the importance of a career in a person's life...this very question is what I would consider subjective, meaning depending on the person and what each person considers important, yes...a career could be very important for their life. I share a few reasons on why...1)I agree with the previous answer in that there is a difference between having a job and having a career. In my view a career is better and can be defined as a series of tasks that one does to improve themselves both professionally and personally. With these improvements, an individual can get personal satisfaction and pride in doing something innovative...that is making something better than how you found it. With innovation, often times, there is also reward..mostly financial reward accompanied by an increase in the amount of influence you have over how you get to build your own career....which can be super huge! :) 2)For people who are driven to be the best they can at what they chose to do, a career serves as a path that one can create that is based on what an individual likes to do, what that individual does well and whether these two things can come together in a positive way in the job market. When these two things plus the job market are strong, the individual likely will have a good career for all of their working years....as opposed to having to struggle to find a "good job" every couple of years. 3)Each person can and should set their own priorities. For example, if a career, a good one, comes at the expense of one's health or family, some people may decide to put health or family above a career. There will likely always be a balance that is needed in this area.
I hope you find this answer helpful. Best of luck to you!
