Hi isabella A. Thank you for your question and for your desire to be the best you can be!

It has been my experience that whether we are talking about middle school, high school, college or as a team working in a business, one of the requirements for getting ahead is focus. A focused mind can be one of the strongest assets a person has to getting ahead. A strong level of focus can then lead to steps that help you to get ahead. Practicing these important steps can become useful habits as you move through your academic and professional journeys.

Once the focus in there, some of the steps may include 1)understanding what your strengths are and where you have opportunities to grow. In short, you can't fix a problem you don't know about. In those opportunity areas, spend the time to dig into the learning. Then test yourself. When you are ready, have others that you trust test you. Continue this cycle until you can prove to yourself that you "know it cold"..in other words that you know the essence of the material that you are trying to improve on. Most people will tell you that when you know it, you know it :). 2)Be in the habit of building on what you know. In other words, often times getting ahead is additive. You learn something really great, you are able to retain that great thing and then you learn how to add to it in meaningful ways.

Admittedly, sometimes getting (and keeping) that focus can be challenging. But...this is where motivators come it. Ask yourself "what will keep me motivated to stay focused to be better than I am right now?" Also understand the things that de-motivate you...and keep your exposure to de-motivators and/or distractions to a minimum. To be clear, I do not suggest being heads down on being the best.....24 hours a day. If you can focus on a task, to get better for a designated time period (example 1 hour per day for 2 days in a week and then add on from there when/if needed), you will find that letting in some downtime is actually a really good motivator as well.

I hope you find this answer helpful. Best of luck to you!

You have a lot of fantastic suggestions about getting ahead in school here, and I'd like to point out that school exists to prepare you for life and a career. Getting good grades is just one part of the equation, and in many instances it isn't the most important part.

Communication skills, time management skills, empathy, and the ability to see the bigger picture are all other parts of being successful in career and life. Make sure you take time to work on things like having a conversation, seeing a situation from the other party's point of view, taking a few minutes to understand what's being asked of you and how that fits into the bigger context of what your team is trying to accomplish. These are things that aren't typically taught in school, and can contribute greatly to your success.

Grades will help you land a job, but once you have the job, it's these other skills that will determine whether you are an average employee or an exceptional employee. They also help immensely in personal relationships.

Brayden’s Answer

Hello!

There are a couple of ways to get ahead in school but untimely hard work is the key driving force into getting ahead. I found that I actually enjoyed college more than high school because in college you are able to see ahead using the class schedule and this allows you you to work ahead. Typically some of the best ways I found to get ahead were little things like:

- doing a whole weeks notes in 1 day
- doing a whole weeks worth of reading in 1 day
- starting a paper multiple weeks before its due

Even little things like doing notes or prepping for a paper or exam early can have great benefits on your overall success in school. I found that during the week I was tired and would put off things that I would be using the next day so taking some time during the weekend to write down notes or getting a pre lecture done was greatly beneficial.

Hopefully that helps! Good luck!

Hi isabella,

I think that you have gotten some great feedback here. I would add an additional item - create a network around you of people who can help you with school. So what does that mean? I would say that if you have challenges in particular subjects, engage in study groups or even get a tutor. You do not have to learn on your own. It can be helpful to engage with someone who is good in the subject, since they can explain the subject to you in a different way than textbooks. I would say that in your network, you want people who have the level of seriousness when it comes to school as you do. These individuals can hold you accountable when you are not able to hold yourself accountable.

Hello,

In my experience, the best way to get ahead in school is to create a planner/schedule. Take the time to organize your tasks and day. Taking the time to visually see what your day looks like will help you determine where you can find time to complete homework and do your assignments.

Another suggestion I have is to not procrastinate. It sounds like a no brainer, but it's easier said that done. Think about this analogy: You're trying to fill up a jar with big stones and sand. The jar represents your time, the big stones represent your big responsibilities such as big assignments or things you cannot skip, and the sand represents little assignments and not as important tasks. If you fill the jar with all the sand first, then the stones, it won't all fit because the sand takes up most of the jar and the stones can't sink into the sand. Instead, put in a few stones, then put in some sand, then repeat until everything fit's into the jar. The same goes for life: Focus on doing your big tasks, and sprinkle in your smaller tasks when you can. If you focus on shaping your day around gradually doing your big tasks, you won't be putting them off until the last minute, and you'll find yourself ahead in school. This is also where a planner comes in handy.

I hope this helps!

Benjamin’s Answer

Hi Isabella,

In order to get ahead in school, you must make a conscious effort to do so. One tool that helps me get ahead in school is using an agenda book. Planning out when I am going to complete tasks helps me avoid procrastinating my schoolwork and also allows me to get ahead in school as well as better balance my schoolwork and social life. When it comes to exams, studying as early as possible greatly helps avoid procrastination.

With online school this past year due to the pandemic, following these steps helped me learn more and get better grades:
1. Before class, read up on the class's current topic in the textbook and/or your notes from the day before.
2. When in class, take good notes and pay strong attention.
3. After class, review your notes.
4. If possible, complete your homework for that class after step 3.

I hope this answer helps!
