Hi Esther! To be an Ob/GYN you have to go to medical school but before medical school you have to complete an undergraduate education in a university. You can be any major and apply to medical school but there are certain classes to take such as chemistry, biology, physics, etc. They are known as prerequisites. I would recommend to check out AAMC as well as Dr.Gray on Youtube, he has many helpful premed videos. If you are in college seek out a premed adviser, and obtain a sheet that lists the classes on there to take (it is usually posted outside their door), start getting involved in activities such as volunteering with patients and community service.
I would also recommend to find a physician you can shadow, it can be an OB/GYN but it also can be other physicians as well. Try cold calling or emailing physicians nearby to cast a wide net, express your interest for medicine and see if any are interested to shadow- it may take time but it is crucial to shadow a physician before medical school. Check out the link below on shadowing.
In addition prepare for the classes to take and the MCAT exam, as well as doing well in school. Applying to medical school is competitive and you want to make sure you have a good GPA and MCAT score (508+ and 3.6+ for GPA) usually if you have a pretty high GPA such as 3.8+ it can compensate for a lower MCAT score and vice versa. However, remember that it is not only academics but showcasing your commitment to medicine, writing strong essays and showing impact. There are cases where applicants with strong scores need to reapply - definitely check out Dr.Gray via Medical School Headquarters for advice on essays and showing impact in applications. It really is a holistic process, the grades can open the doors but the essays land the interview and hopefully the acceptance!
I wish you the best!

The first step is to sit down with someone in the field and see what it is really like to be an Ob/Gyn the reality is very different from what you see on TV
How would you suggest this student find someone to shadow and talk to?
