Where can a person go to learn cryptography and ciphers?

I am interested in making a hobby out of these two things and I am wondering where exactly I can go to acquire such skills? If anyone knows anything on this subject it would be much appreciated for any pointers in the right direction! #extracurriculars #hobbies #cryptography #ciphers

Thank you comment icon Hi Nada! It's cool that you're interested in cryptography. If you're talking about cryptography in terms of computer security, then I think a good idea would be to take a class on computer security or if you want to do independent work, look for a class on Udemy! I've taken many online courses at Udemy, and I've really enjoyed them, and they're usually very cheap ($10 when they're on sale). Albert

Alifia’s Answer

The Handbook of Applied Cryptography is free, a very good reference, but not as easy to read: http://cacr.uwaterloo.ca/hac/

Dan Boneh from Stanford has a free crypto course online:

MIT and U of W have also posted course materials online:

Applied Cryptography is a good read and has a great bibliography, but does not include enough details to implement its contents in practice. This has lead to many cases of people misusing source code straight from the book. Matthew Green wrote a good blog post about this:

Besides Alifia's excellent information, I'd suggest looking up the FAST student group at Calpoly Pomona. They hold regular meetings and they'd be a good resource. https://www.cppfast.org/ You seem to be fairly close to Pomona.
