They provide support to other departments or staff members in accessing and retrieving needed files.

As a medical records specialist, your duties are to manage, prepare, and retrieve patient charts and records to ensure accuracy for billing purposes or to provide essential data to clinicians. When you find discrepancies with a file, you request information from nurses, physicians, or other recordkeepers and update the file with the appropriate information. In addition to your data entry responsibilities, you may perform other clerical work, such as preparing billing or payment documents and assisting with audits.
In this role, your tasks will involve scanning documents, updating electronic health records, and preparing charts in advance of patient visits. During this process, you will ensure that our clinical documentation is accurate and complete. You will also respond to release of information (ROI) requests, logging all requests, authorizations, and releases in our system. As part of this role, you will ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, including HIPAA guidelines.

Hi MaKaylah great question! Most medical record specialist positions in charge of ensuring patients records are organized and updated. Most physician offices and hospitals have moved to EMR (Electronic Medical Records) which has shifted the responsibility of the Medical Record Specialist from handling paper records to ensuring accuracy in the members electronic record.
However you could also be an EMR retrieval specialist for health insurance companies that complete record reviews for HEDIS and Medical Risk Adjustment. These individuals visit hospitals and physician offices and download or print medical records for coding purposes.
