How is medical school structured?

I know that I want to become an OB/GYN but I never really have gotten a reasonable explanation of what medical school is. I want to understand what it is you learn, what you do there, what happens, and all that it entails. #doctor #medicine #medical-education

Dumi’s Answer

Medical school is 4 years long with 1.5-2 years of classroom learning and 2-2.5 years of clinical experience. In some programs your four years are are divided into small blocks of subject or specialty specific learning. The blocks range from 2-10 weeks each. In other programs the first 1.5-2 years are comprised of taking multiple classes at once with the remaining years structured like the blocks I mentioned. There are many test throughout the entire process. In your last year you apply for residency and attend multiple interviews to attain a residency position. Residency is training for doctors to become experts in their specialty.

Richard’s Answer

The first two years of medical school are mainly in the classroom with several hours of lecture every day and the occasional lab including cell biology lab and gross anatomy lab. The 3rd and 4th years of medical school are in the clinic or Hospital Ward. You rotate between the major Specialties in medicine. During the fourth year, you choose a specialty . You may do away rotations in that specialty in the different cities that you plan on applying.

After medical school you will complete a residency in your chosen specialty
