Hi there! Let's start with: what is a goal?
A goal, for me, is a thing that I want to achieve, because it will give me satisfaction and it will make me happy. It will get me closer to other things that I want to do. For example:
I want to become a great software engineer/programmer. For this big goal, I have to achieve other smaller goals. Other objectives that could help me achieve that goal would be:
- learn a programming language
- practice coding
and so on.
If I just think that I want to become a great programmer, it can feel overwhelming. How should I start? What makes a programmer great? How will I know I became what I wanted to be?
This is why a person sets goals: to have answers to questions like these.
If you have the answers, or at least a part of them, organizing your time becomes easier. You know what you have to do or learn. You understand what you are trying to achieve. This is why setting goals makes you more productive, more organised and happier with yourself because you feel you achieved something.
There are plenty of resources on setting goals and objectives online and in books. In time, you will understand when a goal is too big and needs to be broken down in smaller goals, or when a goal is too easy and you actually need to make your next goal more difficult so that you develop and grow.

I think setting goals is important because it helps give us direction and keeps us focused on what's important.
Start by simply making a list of what you would like to accomplish. Could be for the next 5 or 10 years or even just one year. Then list what you need to do to reach your goal. For example, if going to college was my goal, I might include things like researching scholarships or gathering information about various schools online. Then I could have another goal to graduate with a certain degree and list what I need to do to stay on track with that goal.
A goal could be to run a marathon, and then I would review my list of needing to run a certain number of miles each week in preparation. There might also be days when it's helpful to have a simple goal for the day. If you set a goal to be kind to one person each day, you can reflect on how you did that at the end of the day.
Having goals also gives us a reason to celebrate!

In my opinion, goals are life's milestones. Goals help me gauge success, evaluate progress, and motivate myself to reach newer heights. Goals can have different weights in regards to their importance and the time that it takes to accomplish.
When I'm setting a goal I use the "plan backwards" technique. For example, If the goal is to get organized I would first think about an organized me and what that would look like. I would then list certain targets that I would have to reach to get to that final goal and access where I am currently.
