Thank you comment icon It depends on the area of finance you go in. Risk analysis, time management, calculations and customer service skills are all important in field I am in which is an underwriter. I basically help see if someone can qualify for a mortgage loan and become a homeowner. You have to be able to review lot of information basically 200 to 1000 plus pages for a loan and be able to manage your day to complete 4 to 5 loans a day while ensuring that the loan qualifies and knowing the companies guidelines. Besides all the classic skills (quantitative thinking, good communication skills, finance literacy) I would say Excel proficiency. Although you will get there with time, someone without basic knowledge of formulas and how to develop a financial model will have a lot of troubles when starting. Macros are also useful, but that would be the next step.

It's likely that you've already developed solid finance skills, like understanding financial statements and creating detailed financial models, through your academic studies. However, there are other crucial skills you need to perfect. First, you need to become a great storyteller to persuade your stakeholders to make wise decisions. Second, you must be good at working with others and being part of a team. Lastly, you need to have a deeper understanding of accounting concepts.
