Starting with community college is a great way to feel out whether this career is for you. Also having that background may help in getting admitted to nursing school. Any volunteering you can do in the health care arena increases your chances. Also try to take classes relevant to nursing. Anything you can do to demonstrate a passion for nursing will help your chances of being accepted into a program. And if you're not accepted the first time, don't give up! There are many applicants, often far more than there are available spaces, and it might take more than one try.

The answer to this question really depends on the specific program you want to get into. A passion for nursing is critical, but you will also need bedside skills. Volunteering, or trying to find a nurse to shadow, is a good way to determine whether it's a good fit for you. There is a great deal of responsibility in this field but it can be extremely rewarding.
