Kelly’s Answer

Hi Franklin,

I was actually born and raised in Inkster, MI so its a pleasure to connect with another Metro Detroiter.

When it comes to setting a career goal the best advice is to make sure your goal is SMART. A SMART goal is one that is specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound.

Here's a breakdown of this goal setting method:

Specific- Make sure your goal is extremely specific. People go wrong making goals that are too abstract or vague. With a specific goal you will know when you arrived.

Measurable- Quantify your goal so that you know that you are making headway on achieving it. This can be done in a variety of ways but one way of doing so is by writing down the small steps required to reach the goal. Lets say its 12 steps. then for each step you complete you become that much closer to the final goal.

Attainable- Don't set goals too big that they can't be achieved within a timely fashion. It is okay to dream big, but your goals should be stepping stones to your career dreams and aspirations. Make sure that you can reasonably complete your goal and that it aligns with your overall career aspirations.

Relevant- Make sure the goal make sense to your overall career and aspirations. Sure your goal could be to become the best cook in the office but that wouldn't matter as much if you're career is in accounting. I'm sure you catch my drift.

Time-Bound- Give yourself a time limit to complete your goal. This helps you to stay focus on what it takes to complete the goal. So many goals fall apart when people don't set a time limit because there is no urgency if there is no cut off point to reach that limit. Obviously, this time can be adjusted but strive to set a time limit and keep it regardless of what unexpected situations may occur.

I hope the SMART goal method helps you not only with your career goals but with life as well!

Take Care!
