The average workday for a welder includes using various tools to apply heat that bonds pieces of metal together. To prepare for projects, welders also spend time reviewing blueprints, measuring metal dimensions and maintaining equipment. There are really two type of welders, Field welders and Shop welders. Obviously you can be a mix of both, but from a day to day standpoint, there can be differences in the work load.
A field welder may be assigned to work large projects where they are sent to a job site to complete specific projects or to make repairs to exiting equipment. The hours for these types of welders can vary depending on the project or repair. There may be long days and nights in order to keep existing equipment running or to meet a project deadline.
A shop welder will usually have more of a regularly scheduled day. They will typically work 8-10 hours on welding jobs that are sent their location.
Regardless of which you prefer, you'll likely see many surprises as this type of work never really becomes routine. There will always be a new project, repair, or location that you have the opportunity to service.
Hope this helps and good luck!
