Jessica’s Answer

First off, you already are "somebody." You're a budding attorney with aspirations to help children. Often times, we think that we have to wait to become whomever/whatever, but you think differently about your dreams when you choose to think of yourself as already on the path to it rather than planning to start it "one day." Think of your goal like a seed. When you first see a seed, it's just a small hard piece of material in your hand. But, if you plant it, water it everyday, and make sure that it gets the necessary amount of sunshine and nourishment, one day, you'll have something much larger than the seed with which you started.

It's the same idea for pursuing your dream. Your interest in the field is a seed. You plant it by committing to learn everything that you possibly can about the career. You water it by volunteering for different opportunities that relate to your career field. You provide nourishment (to yourself) through all of these things, but also by setting small goals for yourself and then achieving them. This last task show you that you're making progress.

Before you know it, your seed will be ... a mighty oak tree. But, if you think about it, the seed was always meant to become an oak tree. It just needed to be planted. Much like you! You're already meant to be "somebody." Just plant and water that dream!

Michael’s Answer

Hello Ayannah,
The most important thing is to look at your priorities and what you care about.
Having a really strong WHY for your goal is more important than the goal itself as it will motivate you through the good and tough times.
For example, I am changing careers because I want to create stories that will empower people to be curious, courageous, and compassionate critical thinkers. This is important to me because I believe if everyone was more of these 4 C's then we would be able to understand each other better, work together, and help make everything better for everyone. Deeper for myself, I was bullied, picked on, and racially attacked growing up for being different and I don't want others to have to go through something similar. So my goal is to create stories that subtly push people in this direction.
You'll want to find things that are important to you and then figure out what would create the positive change you are looking for. Don't feel like you have to figure it out all now, as you pursue your goal things will change. But the most important thing is to remember your why, so that it will continue to drive you.
Good luck!

Peninsula Commercial Real’s Answer

Good Question because having a goal is the first step to being somebody one day! When I graduated college, my goals was different than where I am now. My goals out of college was to find a career that made money and I wanted to wear suits and work in a large high rise. Those were the goals that I originally had to make me feel like "somebody." Fast forward 17 years later to now and I am 39 years old and I have succeeded in meeting those goals that I had originally set and what I realize now is that what is important is making a positive impact, giving back to the community, and freedom in time. Your goals will evolve at different stages in life but my recommendation is to always have goals, write them down, create some sort of vision board so you know what you are working towards. It's great to keep your eye on the prize because it will always be a roadmap to the decisions you make now. Good Luck!

Neil’s Answer

Hi Ayannah,

Picking my goal has been always a challenge for me until more recently. When I was 9 years old, my goal was to be a baseball player. Once I figured out I wasn't going to be a professional baseball player, had to adjust my goal over and over and over. I finally figured that you need to have short term and long term goals with those short term goals being used as building blocks for your next and long term goals. I have added various skills and learnings though a series of short term goals that keeps me updating that long term goal. I've told peers that I've mentored over the years that we never stop learning those skills that make us successful in our professional and personal life. continuouslearning

Good luck in setting those goals!
