Depending on the state you are trying to become licensed in, there are hour requirements. For PA, for a Cosmetology license, you need to have completed a minimum of 1250 hours of cosmetology curriculum at a licensed school. You would also have to pass the Licensure examination.

Depends on the state your are from. Most states require 1000-1500 classroom hours. Then you need to pass a written test as well as be able to demonstrate basic techniques on actual clients. Check with your state board of health.

Hi Shaniyah!
I am based in Michigan as well and can confirm that Michigan does require 1500 classroom hours. After that, it will definitely take work and time for you to build up your clientele and brand when you are working at a salon but you will get good experience. If you can really build client relationships and a unique brand for yourself, then you can become really successful as an independent stylist. Some side skills I'd recommend would be related to working with computers and marketing skills.
I noticed that you may also want to be your own boss one day which is a really great goal. When you get to that point after a few years, it'll be important for you to research starting your own business (which includes dealing with independent insurance and retirement aspects as well). I wish you luck!
