Working with locally based resources can be important for several reasons, depending on what your medium and style is.

If you're into painting, drawing, and more conventional styles, getting supplies from local businesses rather than big box retailers helps to support small businesses and your local economy. There's the added bonus of instant gratification as well, if you're like me and either run out of supplies or get the urge to experiment with new techniques on a whim. Getting your resources locally can also give you a way to find and connect with other artists in your community. Feedback and creative discourse from your peers can help to inspire you when you're stuck.

If you're into mixed media and reclaimed art, finding resources in your area can provide you with another layer of meaning and inspiration as well. You may find a connection with items native to your region that otherwise wouldn't be there if you purchased them. There's also the added benefit of cost savings.

That said, Michael's right. If this is something you're doing as a career, the people purchasing your work will not be able to distinguish where the resources come from unless you tell them. It comes down to what your personal motivation is and what you're trying to communicate through your art.
