There are lots of more niche industry sites out there, as well as crowdsourced work sites like thumbtack.com, where you can meet others looking for your skills as a business professional. Joining common interest groups on social networking sites like meetup.com, BumbleBFF, facebook, twitter, eventbrite, etc in your area, is another great way to meet people professional and personally. Also check community message boards on sites like Quora.com to meet others working on similar projects or areas of study as you.

Genevieve’s Answer

LinkedIn is definitely one of the top sites for professional networking. Meetup is a good place too. Every industry has their own groups and organizations. For example, Women's Lawyers Association of Los Angeles is a good group for me since I am a woman attorney practicing in LA. Los Angeles County Bar Association of Los Angeles is another good group. There are plenty of them in the legal profession.

Do you have an idea of the career or industry you're interested in? That will help you find groups for networking in your areas of interest.

Thank you comment icon Thanks Genevieve I will definitely check out Meetup, and I am looking to find a position in HR. Nicole

Simeon’s Answer

This might seem counterintuitive, but you can make good use of the apps you are already comfortable with to network. I'd recommend commenting, re-sharing, retweeting, etc. on your platform of choice, but seek out people who have a similar position as you. Don't be ambitious and try to network with the people who could hire you today. Instead, use social media to try and build first connections with like-minded people. If you can convert any of those connections into in-person meetups or events, you'll have everything you need to network right there.
