A few questions about being a sociologist and / or related jobs

First off, what is your schedule / day to day like? What are you likely doing on any given day?
Second, is it challenging? Not an incredible amount of challenge that would make it very frustrating, but enough to make it rewarding.
Third, how much time do you usually have to work on other things? Other things as in things not related to the job.
And lastly what are just some pros and cons of the job? What's your favourite and least favourite part?

Weisin’s Answer

1. My daily schedule starts with a sprint standup, which is a short quick meeting with my project mates on tasks progress. The rest of the day are on working on tasks that are assigned to me in a spring, which is about a 2-week period. If there are ops issues during the day I will drop those tasks and work on resolving them.
2. It is challenging and rewarding at the same time, especially if you know things you built are running smoothly.
3. Usually 20% of my time are spent on other things.. ie volunteer hours, research on new technologies, innovation projects
4. Pros: I get to plan and manage my schedules. Cons: My team is mostly remote and I don't get to meet them in-person.
Favorite: Flexibility. Least favorite: Lack of team building opportunities

Emily’s Answer

Hello! I majored in Sociology and ended up in a career in technology sales. There are many career options with a degree/background in Sociology. Check out a list of options here - https://sociology.nd.edu/undergraduate-program/careers-for-sociology-majors/

Working in tech sales is a very flexible job, I work 100% remote and do product demonstrations to potential clients over zoom. I also partner with a sales team and help them strategize on deals. This job allows me to have a great work/life balance, I may only have 2-3 hours of meetings/calls a day and have plenty of time to do my own thing outside of work. Working in tech is a challenging and fast paced job but not overly difficult or stressful.
