One thing you can do is find a hobby you like that can distract you from what you do day to day.

If you are working on a task and it's been a long period of time, take about 30 mins to stop and do nothing before you go back to it.

Also, if you have a lot of things you have been doing and you are overwhelmed, it is ok to eliminate one or two things and discontinue. Never do too much, especially if you don't have personal time in your life.

What a great question. What I find to be helpful is to first make it a point to LOCK IN some time to actually try to de-stress! So often I see that folks don't find the time, or simply take too little time. As for me, I like to listen to some white noise type recordings. My personal favourite is a track of fighter jets flying in the sky.

Heather’s Answer

Great question! The sooner you learn and practice stress management, the better. I find exercise is one of the biggest stress busters out there. Anything that gets your heart pumping. You mentioned basketball. That is not only a very fun sport but also provides the needed cardio to break stress up in your body. Try different sports so you have a variety to choose from. Jumping jacks, burpees, and running in place as fast as you can work too.

Relaxation techniques are also great ways to break away from stress. Have you thought about drawing anime cartoons? Drawing can take your mind off things that might stress you and also provide something fun you can show your family and friends. Crafts, building things, painting, the skys the limit when using your creative mind.

A quick and easy stress reliever are breathing techniques. If you have to give a speech in front of people or feel stressed before a test, try fake laughing. Believe it or not, it works! Another breathing technique is 'smell the roses, blow out the birthday candles'. Do this slowly, counting to 10 as slow as you can while breathing in through your nose, and slowly (counting to 10) when breathing out of your mouth while making a whistle shape with your lips. Did you know professional singers use breathing exercises to improve their skill?

One additional tip, I can provide, is to be prepared and be early. If you give yourself enough time, you'll be more relaxed and less likely to be stressed. There's nothing more stressful than being late. Most of all, it's usually preventable. If you are prepared, by studying or knowing your material, you'll feel more confident and easy going when working on your work or a test.

Take care. Stay safe and keep studying!

Heather recommends the following next steps:

Look up breathing exercises for singers
Practice leaving and arriving 5 minutes early
Try a new sport to see if you like it
Draw your favorite anime character
Study one hour extra for your next test

Yasemin’s Answer

Hi Jeremiah! Everyone has some different things they like to do to destress, so I would recommend to find out what you like and try them out- it seems you already have a few so keep at them! For me I love to exercise such as yoga and running and reading! Every year I devote a number of books to read and follow my process through Goodreads-an app where you can add books and take on reading challenges! I think it's a great way to reduce screen time and give your brain a rest, especially before going to bed!

I hope this helps!
Best of luck!

It's helpful to recognize your stress triggers. You can try keeping a journal for a couple of weeks to see what causes you the most stress and how you react to it.
Physical activity and healthy sleep habits are key. Have set times to recharge, do not overload or overwork yourself. Work a set schedule when possible to avoid burnout.
Speak up and ask for support from your team.

Ann M.’s Answer

Stress is an interesting feeling defined as "Stress is the feeling of being overwhelmed or unable to cope with mental or emotional pressure" (mentalhealth.org.uk). I think this definition is worth a little analyzation and understanding as it pertains to "you". I work really well under pressure as I am able to quickly pivot from problem to problem throughout my day. I have a boost of adrenaline in these situations and I love having the opportunity to work with others to find solutions. Some may call that same feeling stress and shy away from it.

I have also experienced the feeling of being overwhelmed and wanting to shut down instead of immediately face whatever it is causing the stress. I typically come back to these problems and situations when I feel stronger and have the mental space to handle them.

If you take an assessment of that stress when you are experiencing it, how do you define it? I think this definition, which is specific to you, will help you decide how best to handle and cope with stress. Do you need a distraction such as exercise or a hobby to take your mind off of the stressor or do you need to push through and have that conversation or do that task "now"?

I have found that bringing forth that self-awareness of how you are feeling in the moment, and why, can result in a stronger you, capable of handling stressors as they come.
