Veronica’s Answer

When trying to figure out a career choice, it is important to think about things that you like to do as well as things that you are good at. It is important to work at different places when you are young to get a feel for what you like, find interesting and motivating as we work for many years of our lives, so you want to do things which bring both satisfaction and purpose. You can also interview family members and friends to find out more about different types of jobs/careers as that may provide some of the pros and cons for those jobs/careers.

Having options is really a good thing too, so if you make a choice and it doesn't work out, always have a 2nd and 3rd choice to fall back on. Most people don't know what they want to be when they grow up, but learn over time what type of work makes them happy, challenged and ultimately helps them be self-sufficient.

Reema’s Answer

I found things I enjoy doing and some kind of fell in my lap. I really enjoyed being around kids. Then my first year I signed up to go to juvenile hall to hang out with the kids and that experience really changed me. I ended up teaching for social justice and it’s still a passion. I think you have to think about what you would love doing, so you feel passionate, motivated, excited. Nothing will feel like that 24/7 but mostly it should feed your soul, you’ll also do your best work this way.

Give yourself permission to change too. Life takes us on some crazy journeys and things can change. Be flexible and open to new opportunities. Hope that helps!

Gadeer’s Answer

This is something I struggled with as well. As a child, I had little to no exposure to different types of jobs and this made it difficult to decide on a college. Depending on what major you decide to pursue, there are some colleges/universities that offer better programs and funding. Ironically enough, I started my college application as undecided. However, I applied to one of the university scholarships, and based on what I wrote, the university placed me in the school of business. My essay was related to things I had enjoyed doing. I don't remember it in great detail but it was related to how I liked enjoyed pretending to be a business owner.

I would advise you to begin by looking inward. What are some things you do in your free time? Is there something that brings you joy? What are some skills you are good at? You can use this as a starting point to help figure out a major. In addition, talk with the adults in your life. Ask them about what they do and what that entails. If that sounds interesting to you then look further into that area of interest. Personally, I also want to be practical so not only do I want to pursue something I enjoy but I want to make sure I can make a living in that career/job.

At the end of the day, just remember it is ok to decide you want to change your major. In my experience, while I was placed in the school of business, I thought accounting was the way to go. After the 1st accounting class that changed quickly ha-ha. I had spent a lot of time prior to college around a computer and in web design-related classes. I realized computers is where my true passion and pursued a major in Computer Information Systems.

The best advice I could give is to try as many different "jobs" as possible when you're younger. Volunteer, do odd jobs, take different classes, and then figure out what you want to do.
There are also two philosophies regarding career- using your job to fund your hobbies, or find a way to make your job align with your hobby.
