Michael’s Answer

Hello Jimmy, many future designers feel the need to earn a degree to work for Nintendo or CD Project Red or other studios. One of my friends has a bachelor's degree in design from a gaming school and still hasn't found a position. What studios want is someone with experience which lucky for you doesn't require working for a studio!

If you want to code, learn a few program languages (C#/C++/Java/Python) etc and make some programs! They could be for video games, they could be for turning on the lights at your house when you get within a certain range but show you bring something to the table as degrees are a dime a dozen now but experience is what get's you a seat at the table.

Good Luck!

Michael recommends the following next steps:

Learn languages for programming
Code programs for sequences/Basic Games
Reach out to Studios you want to work for and ask them what they want to see in coders so you know what to shoot for
Profit $$$

D.’s Answer

In many cases there's no degree requirement. In general, gaming is more degree-agnostic than the general tech field, but it does vary from company to company.

However, in nearly all gaming companies, skills speak louder than a degree for devs.

Hi, I have seen many game developers that have picked up programming on their own out of passion for the field. I have seen many that have come out of high-school and started programming. However, I strongly recommend a college degree in Computer Science. As you may know, Gaming is a hit driven industry and while passion for games is high, it might fade and you need to keep yourself optionality and that is what a degree in Computer Science gives you.
