Dexter’s Answer
Hi Shengyang,
For me, success is happiness. And I don't mean happiness with my job, my friends, my children, my country, or anything like that. Success just means happiness with yourself. I think most people use the word love instead of happiness, but love is complicated (at least for me) and I can understand happiness, so that's the word I'm going to stick with.
I think for me, I was raised to be unhappy with myself. I was taught to hunger for things that I didn't have, so that I would stretch myself for those things and so that I would grow and learn to be more than what I used to be. It allowed me to learn a whole lot in school, and to use some of those skills to get a job, and then grow in that job. I've been very lucky to have gone through my life and be at a place where I still definitely have to work (for decades to come), but I am pretty comfortable. But that comfort isn't happiness. That unhappiness regarding myself that I've been programmed with—I'm just starting my journey to un-learn it.
I'm trying real hard to teach myself how to be happy with just myself. If I can truly be happy with who I am as I am, then I think, I will have been successful in life. Others may say that other goals, such as a wife/husband, friendship, careers, money etc are the measure of success, but I believe that they cannot fill that gap in your soul as happiness with yourself can.

Hi Shengyang,
Great question. Success is subjective. I think success means something differently for everyone. If you correlate money with success than having a career that makes you the money that would make you feel successful is success to you. Success could be as simple as doing what you love day in and day out.

I agree with folks above that success is really dependent on you and what's important to you. I think it's okay to be "selfish" as well and really examine what's going to bring you happiness. It could be wanting financial stability and the ability to have a lot of disposable income or it could be to just work 9-5pm and not have to bring work back home. Try to examine within yourself, what will bring you happiness and it's okay if that changes over time as you start working but stay in touch with yourself and your values.

You can succeed by putting an end goal and working day and night to achieve that. The goal has to be something achievable, realistic and something you really want to pursue. In addition, time management is one of the most important skills that leads to success. In these chaotic times, one has to manage his or her tasks and prioritize them in order to be effective.
