Would a minor benefit me if I'm trying to get into Med school?

I want to be a forensic psychiatrist and have to go to medical school for it. I plan on majoring in either biology or biochemistry for my four-year degree. I don't know if a minor would help me find a career if medical school ends up not being available for me. #medical-school #biology

The degree itself will help you find an alternate career choice should medical school not end up working out. Preparing for med-school can be very stressful, but of course rewarding as well. If the minor isn't a value add to get into the school of your choice, I would focus more on your studies for the 4-year degree. I would also take a look at your course plan. Sometimes if you take too many electives or alternate credits, you can easily add one a class or 2 for the minor and do both with minimum stress.

As you’re planning out your classes, I’d suggest taking a look at your schedule. Are there any minors that would only require an extra class or two on top of your classes you’re already required to take? For example: most schools will recommend you take several semesters of chemistry before applying to med school. This means adding a chem minor would only have been 1 extra class at my school.

I minored in Spanish as a way to have something easy to point to in job applications/grad school interviews that proved my competency. I wonder if there would be a similar minor for you — as you think about future career paths, is there something that you’re not excited enough about to major in, but might want to be able to use to prove to someone you’ve done coursework in it? Computer Science is another excellent example of a skill set like that!
