Ann’s Answer

I would certainly see if your school or a local “sister school” has an Allied Health Program. Entering in this program at any point and time in your High School years could not only give you a boost in opportunities for some of the requirements, but sometimes there are offers to have individuals volunteer within a practice or medical office setting. I started working in the medical field when I was a Junior in High School in a observation opportunity to do a rotation at the local Hospital. In those 3 weeks I shadowed in just about every possible position from laundry to delivering flowers to new mothers and eventually in my Senior year I was observing surgeries in a gallery along side the Medical students. There are so many layers to working in the field of medicine especially patient care. Try as many different areas as you can and ultimately you will find the one that will give you the most joy.

Ann recommends the following next steps:

Check about vocational programs near by.
Talk to someone at the local hospital about volunteering
Be open to all the areas of medicine
Talk to your guidance counselor about volunteer opportunities in medical setting in your local area

Desiree’s Answer

As a high school student interested in medical school, I recommend that your short term focus should be on get terrific grades in biology and chemistry, and strong grades in your other classes too. GPAs matter a lot to undergrad unviserities and medical schools. If you have a chance and the means to volunteer or work part time in a medical setting if any sort, I think that would help - to allow you to see first hand the sort of environment you might one day be working in; to make connections in the field (who can share their career path and perhaps one day write referral letters for under grad and/or med school); and will demonstrate a long term commitment to the medical field should you choose to pursue it down the road.

Desiree recommends the following next steps:

Keep your grades up!
Look for opportunities to volunteer/work part time in medical facilities
