Hi Marlene, great question! I believe the first thing you need to know about OB/GYN if you are interested in this as a future doctor is the ability to help a woman on her journey. An OB/GYN is involved in almost everything related to women's health. It can range from the time when she is in her puberty to when she is pregnant and given birth, and later on when she hits her menopause. Not only that you are providing direct care on female reproductive health, you can take the initiative on preventive care, through screening and advising on other female-related conditions (including intimate partner violence/abuse). Several OB/GYNs also specialize in gynecology oncology, which is a cancer doctor focusing on female-related cancers (ie. cervical, ovarian, endometrial cancers, etc). It is a competitive field which requires high commitment and passion, but it surely is a rewarding pursuit.

The major thing you need to know about an obgyn is that they are there to help/coach you through selfcare as a woman. You need to be comfortable while with them so be very wise and picky when it comes to YOU and who handles your body, as this is a very intimate process of life as women. No one will know you better than your OB. You have to have an open mind and heart to understand the changes your body will go through as your body matures and having someone you trust and feel comfortable with is key. It can be very scary (the fear of the unknown) but all rewarding in the end because you are well educated on you and your body. Hope this helps!
