Steven’s Answer

Hi Abdulwahab. Finance, and especially the investment business, is mostly about people. Ultimately every trade and investment idea will end up having an impact on someone's financial well-being. With that in mind, it's a team sport, where the strengths and capabilities of many finance pros can better meet the needs of a diverse clientele.

And to paraphrase Warren Buffett, everyone needs to be a salesperson, just to get your ideas accepted and implemented.

Good luck

Maxine’s Answer

Finance is a personal issues unless you have a partner. If there is a partner he or she need to be in total agreement with the financial plan. Each person need to concentrate of each other want and done wants in order to obtain your goals.

Thank you comment icon Hi Maxine! I think in this particular question Abdulwahab is referring to "finance" as the "financial services industry", not in terms of "personal finance". Jared Chung, Admin

R. Scott’s Answer

I would say in almost all cases you work across a group of people or support an organization from an analysis & controls point of view.

Thank you comment icon Hi R. Scott, Would you say that your work is mostly in groups? What % of an "average" day would you say you're engaging in teamwork versus doing solo work? Sounds like your experience would be super insightful on this! Jared Chung, Admin

John H.’s Answer

Hi there, again, Abdulwahab: great that you have a lot of questions! Finance, if you're thinking of Wall Street investment banks and the like, work a lot in teams. If you watch any of the popular movies about Wall Street, you'll see a workplace that is open with lots of desks next to each other, and people constantly on the phone, checking out their computer screens, and collaborating with one another. Of course, these are primarily the people on the trading floors. There are other jobs in finance where people do lots of research, and those jobs can be more solitary. In other words, you can find both scenarios in the world of finance. So, it's a good idea to do some self assessment to see what environment might be the best fit for you by talking to people who work in finance . . . and also just doing general career exploration to see if finance is, indeed, your best fit.

Ramandeep’s Answer

Finance work can be both depending on the discipline of Finance work. Speaking from an FP&A perspective, there may be duties assigned to individual team members (such as being the dedicated Finance partner to a business unit), but it can also be very collaborative as everyone does their part to work towards a unified operating plan and work together to manage to objectives. So, the dynamic can be that you are allowed the opportunity to put your individual stamp on your work whilst being involved with your peers.
