Jay’s Answer

I got into Private Wealth Management on accident! I worked in Real Estate Private Equity for a year after graduating (in the middle of the pandemic) and it was not for me. I knew I wanted to work in more traditional finance (stock market, investments, retirement planning, etc.). I am so happy I made the career switch. Everyday we make an impact on our client's lives because there are very big and important decisions to be made.

I also love that my job is very different day to day. Sure there are some things you do daily, but for the most part, no two days are the same. If you are interested in a career in finance, Private Wealth Management is a solid choice.

You are not alone if you are struggling with a career choice or what to study in school, everyone goes through those moments. What is important to remember is to stay calm and to do something you enjoy. After all, the saying goes "If you do something you love, you'll never work a day in your life".

Hi David,

This is a great question! I really struggled to find my job because I knew what I wanted to do, I just wasn't sure what it was called or how to get there. I knew it was in the realm of marketing (or thought it might be) so I started taking informational calls with any people I get on the phone to hear about what they do and how they got there.

After this, I had an idea of some jobs that might be what I was looking for, so this is when I took internships. It took me 3 internships before I actually landed a job in what I thought I wanted to do, only to realize it was not the exact fit. But, by that time my resume was filled with marketing experience, and I was able to land my job at my dream job.

Without all that prior exploring and experience, it would have been a lot harder for me to get my job. I really encourage exploring what is it exactly you wish you could do, and figure out who get's paid to do a similar job. Start talking to those people and keep your ears open for the job that sounds right for you.

Hi! I chose to be a Learning Consultant/Instructional Designer because it's a good marriage between several things that I love to do.

I am a creative. I have to build things out of nothing. In this job, I get to create training which sometimes it's fun activities and other times it's graphic heavy job aids that help people understand complex concepts.

I get to be a storyteller with visuals and sometimes even video.

I'm a planner. I love understanding the strategy and creating a plan to get to that goal.

My recommendation is to figure out the types of things you enjoy doing and then find a job that matches those things. It may not match it exactly but it could still bring you lots of joy. I wanted to be a filmmaker but the things that I love about filmmaking, I get to do in my role as an instructional designer.

Hannah’s Answer

I think may times the job chooses us, it certainly did for me. As previously mentioned above I also struggled with my first job role choice. I ended up working in Customer Service for many years as I liked the people I worked with and the job as I find great reward from helping others. I then got the opportunity to train a new team within customer service and realised then that my helping (and developing) others strengths worked very well here. I have since worked in many different companies, mostly in a Learning & Development capacity and in many different industry’s as this has enabled me to continually progress and challenge myself.
