The dangers that come with underwater welding can be overcome with working from the right team and company which dedicate supporting the safety and well-being of staff. If you take a general college programme for welding, you can always look into gaining out of water welding experience first and then research more about industry contacts and companies for underwater welding. Your life and career are on the line, so it's better to be well informed and work your way into a supportive team environment if you do choose to pursue underwater welding. Offshore oil projects may need maintenance support but companies that create HVAC systems also require welders for production. Hope this helps your decision making process along!

It's extremely dangerous, which is why the pay is so high. The fatality rate is 15%, so imagine looking around a room of 100 people, 15 out of those 100 people won't make it. Whether you believe it is worth the risk is ultimately up to you. We have people risking their lives in the military for barely above minimum wage pay, while firefighters and crab fishermen also risk their lives and make a lot more.

There are definitely financial benefits for having a risky position. However, this decision can only be decided by you. If this is your life long dream then the risk will less likely to be important. If your decision is based on financial benefit, then risk will factor in. Welding is a great career both above and below water and both pay well. Try to prepare a pro - con list and discuss with your family.
