Internships and reaching out to individual field experts are a great start in the field. Training comes with time once you get into an internship.

To work commercially, at least a Bachelors Degree. But jobs are very few.
To work in a lab, probably a Masters Degree. Not a lot of jobs here either, but more in total than with a Bachelors Degree.
To work in as a Principal Investigator, PhD Degree. Again, not a position with a lot of opportunity in terms of open roles.
That said, If you know that you want to do it, go for it. Even if you don't end up in it as a career, the experience is invaluable for many other careers as well. And it's awesome!
