There are many different types of surgeons.
General, Head and Neck (ENT), Vascular, Orthopedic, Cardiac, Thoracic, Urology, Neuo, Plastic, Trauma, Gynecology, Obstetrics, Foot and Ankle, Podiatrist, Opthalmic, Maxillofacial, and Oral.
Surgeons can also do fellowships to specialize in oncology, and pediatric. General surgeons can also specialize in breast, or cole-rectal as well. Orthopedic surgeons can specialize in total joints, spine, sports medicine, shoulders and elbows, or hands. Plastic surgeons can either be cosmetic or reconstructive. Even neuro surgeons can specialize in brain or spine.

As a nurse I found there were more surgeries than I could imagine. And, then in working as a nurse and midwife I enjoyed different aspects of surgery. For example, as a nurse midwife I found it fascinating how I could repair the body with sutures (fascinating the many types of sutures used based on the type of surgery). As a nurse, it was a great experience to be the scrub nurse during major surgeries working with providers (e.g physicians, midwives, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners) in the surgery. Or, in minor surgeries outside of the operating room and assisting the provider and then caring for the patient after the surgery.
In the past, many surgeries were commonly performed in the hospital setting. However, now with ambulatory surgery centers the surgeries that were done in the hospital and patients stayed in the hospital for days, today patients can have a surgery and go home the same day or just a few hours later.
We have come a long way with surgeries, and some surgeries we use to perform in the past are not preformed any more.
Perhaps you will be the one who discovers a surgery that we do not need anymore because there is an alternative safer treatment.
I provided the web address below where you can learn more about the different types of surgeries.
