Nicole’s Answer

A neonatal nurse has many responsibilities on a day-to-day basis. Neonatal nurses are constantly assessing the babies. Usually by watching the monitors they are hooked up to or watching them to see how they tolerate being handled. Neonatal nurse take the babies vital signs, change diapers, measure, weigh, bathe, feed, give medications, give vaccines, draw blood, reposition the babies, help their parents take care of their babies, and educate parents. Neonatal nurses also go to high-risk deliveries of premature babies. They also are involved in transporting a baby from one hospital to another hospital that has more equipment to help them grow bigger or get better. Neonatal nurse also act as a bridge between the babies and the doctors to get their needs met. Neonatal nurses also help parents stay connected with their babies.

Jane’s Answer

A day in the life of a neonatal nurse:
I am responsible for total care of my babies for my shift, which is usually 12 hours. This includes vital signs, feedings, diaper changes, doing lab work, respiratory care, IV site and IV fluid care, diagnostic testing, parent support, and parent education. Most care occurs on an hourly basis so most days are vey acitve.
I might also be involved in the admission of a new baby to the NICU which, in many cases, is an emergency situation.
At my facility I may also be asked to attend a delivery with the neonatal nurse practitioner.
Always learning!
Hope this helps!
