How do I get started in the Emergency Management field?

I am a current undergraduate at North Dakota State University, living in Hillsboro, OR. I am studying emergency management and biological sciences, and am currently involved with the red cross as a recovery specialist and emergency management government liaison. I am incredibly interested in disaster relief as well as tsunami disaster mitigation and preparation. I have 4 1/2 years of experience working in healthcare, 1 year was in the ER, and I am always looking for opportunities to gain more experience in health and EMGT/DMGT.

Is there anyone who can provide some insight into how they got their position? What do you look for in an intern/future colleague? Anyone know anything about tsunami research?

Abdul Nasir’s Answer

Emergencies happen on an un-timed basis so are there responses (ASAP basis) normally there is a chain of leadership or one is sought - agreed upon during emergency management. So in such deligation may not appear much often as help is always needed at all levels, locations, and in sizes. Dealing with situations with no prior advent knowledge of happening, similar or worse after-effects, and seeing the future through the wreckage and the ruble.

Thomas’s Answer

Emily,

While tangentially related, I used to work closely with individuals who led the business continuity/safety and security part of Hilton Worldwide. They would look for individuals who were passionate about emergency management, disaster preparedness, and thinking through 'what-if' scenarios. I will always highlight soft skills and showing your passion as ways in which to show your worth more than any type of previous experience. Not a great answer but these jobs can be few and far between if you don't expand out into Business Continuity and Safety and Security.

Hope this helps!

Tom
