Yasmine! Great on you for wanting to do more. One of the most important things you can do is volunteer for leadership positions. During an interview you will be given character based questions. For example "Tell me about a time you initiated change" or " Tell me about a time you have failed". One of the most common mistakes made by incoming professionals is thinking that grades are the only thing that matters. You have to have experience in life lessons that you just dont get in the class room. Having experience leading a school club or local community event gives you something to talk about in an interview. This makes the interaction with the company seem more human and less awkward.
Thank you comment icon Thank you so much Juan!! I will try to take as much opportunities as possible! Do you know where can I find something online? Like something virtual? Yasmine
Thank you comment icon Hi Juan, I think the asker is looking for specific suggestions that relate to COVID and the limited opportunities currently available. You gave some great examples here for acquiring experience in general, but could you expand on how to find these given the pandemic’s challenges? Alexandra Carpenter, Admin

While I always recommend taking the time to learn and study, one of the best ways to get marketing experience right now is to try starting a small business! Even if the product is small, you can learn a lot by going through the process of setting up a website, SEO, preparing advertisements of your product, and strategizing who you want to sell to. As a bonus - if you actually sell something, you make money! All of this is direct experience that you can put on your resume at some point, and you'll be able to give great examples during interviews of how you overcame obstacles and how you measured success.

Nathalie’s Answer

Hi!
I would recommend taking at least one of Google's online courses. I completed their beginner Google Analytics course and now working through the Advanced course. They are free and so impactful! It's always a good idea to brush up on the new and latest innovations with Google Analytics. Especially if you do not have any digital marketing experience yet.

Also, I would try to research professional marketing organizations and see what the would be needed to do to join the group. I would imagine they are hosting virtual events and seminars that will be great to attend. This will also provide more insight into the career!

I hope this helps!

This is a great question Yasmine. I would recommend the followings:
1) Attend online courses. Google offers many free online courses. You may consider leveraging this platform.
2) Obtain an internship opportunity through your school.
3) Serve in your local community as a volunteer. You can consider taking on volunteering opportunities available in your school.
4) Actively participate in extra curriculum activities that give you exposure or experience in developing leadership skills. For example, get involved in new students orientation.
Hope the above helps. All the best!

Hi Yasmine,

Here are a few ideas:
(1) Find Online Courses & Webinars to build your knowledge and skill set in your areas of interest.
(2) Connections are everything. Reach out to friends and contacts on LinkedIn and kindly ask if you can have a virtual (or in person) meeting to learn about their career path, advice and passions.
(3) Look for companies that have internship, mentorship/fellowship, or rotational programs - which have a limited, set time for you to learn about a field and get a feel for whether it's a career you want to pursue.
(4) Set alerts and news sources in areas of your interest to stay up to speed on trends.

Good luck!

Julia
