Chris’s Answer

A member of my family started a cookie shop transformed it into a cookie factory where they make custom business gifts with cookies and chocolates for businesses.

It is and was very hard work but also very financially rewarding.

They work long hours during their busy seasons around holidays but during the slower times, they have a lot of flexibility.

Their initial focus was on creating delicious recipes and followed that up with focusing on consistency. These are two very important things to focus on because they are the reason customers will come back.

Donna’s Answer

Hope;

I would like to say, I have no idea what it would be like to run a "sweet shop", but I applaud you for wanting to strike out on your own to start a business. I have attached a link below from the Small Business Administration for 10 steps in starting a small business.

I take it you must love to bake. Will you have a specialty? Cakes, cup cakes, cookies, candy or will you do it all?

With online, I would think you may be able to start first from home and then expand to store front (or not).

Do some online research, there are many non-profit organizations which support women owned businesses as well as just small business in general. Loans, mentorships, and help is available all you have to do is ask.

John M’s Answer

My wife is a co-owner of an ice cream franchise and being a small business owner is both rewarding and extremely busy. First you need to ensure that you have the demand for your products in the location you want to have this business. For an ice cream shop depending on where you are located it could be very seasonal. I guess the thing to really focus on is ensuring you have a product that customers want, you have a location that is easily accessible and in an area where people want your product, you have staff that can work the hours needed as well as provide the best customer service you feel is warranted and lastly your location is always clean and looks inviting.

- Location
- Product
- Staff
- Customer Service
- Inviting and clean store

Good luck!
