Hi Jackie
In UK Universities, a course will often consist of 2 elements:
1.) Lectures - a speaker will discuss a topic in-front of a large audience, with a low level of interaction
2.) Tutorials - this will take place with the speaker in a class room with a much smaller group (maybe less than 8 students), where you have the opportunity to discuss the topics covered in the lecture and go through any specific questions you have
At the end of a term (semester, I believe is the US terminology) you will have an examination that will cover the different topics covered in the lectures and tutorials.
For some topics, you may be given assignments to complete as well, which will contribute to your final grade.
I hope this is useful information!

While education varies from country to country, university courses tend to have few assignments in European countries than in the US. Your only graded assignments for many classes may be the mid-term and final exam. There is often a greater expectation that students will identify major topics on their own.
