What skills would I need to become an electrical engineer in the future?

I was hoping to get some practice before I just decide to get a degree on it. #engineering #electrical-engineering

Thank you comment icon this would require a great degree of aptitude in mathematics and science from students. Katherine

I knew some people that worked at the local utility and I spent some time with them. I also attended a camp about electricity for 4 years during the summer. And, I had electrical projects in the 4-H program. There are many types of electrical engineering. So, look for camps, projects, and mentors.

Rich’s Answer

Consider interning or if you are in college - co-oping. That gives you some hands on experience in the field. Job shadowing might also work to get exposed. Consider reaching out to professional organizations like IEEE which have ways for students to get some exposure to the field. Depending on what type of EE you are considering may also drive where you can experience. Consider volunteering at non-profits for computer work or Habitat for some hands on electrical (they have paid trades do it but you may be able to shadow them).
