Henry’s Answer
When going on a construction site, the following should happen:
Person working or visiting the project site should wear PPE (Hard Hat, Safety Glasses, Construction approved safety boots, Ear plugs, and Safety gloves) and other PPE if need, such as fall protection, ear puffs, goggles, masks, or shields.
Safety plan should be provided to all individuals working on-site. The safety program will identify the areas of risks and provide required safety pre-cautions for workers and individuals visiting the sites.
Perform safety orientation before workers or visitors go onsite. The safety orientation should be documented and reviewed with attendees to ensure there understanding of the safety rules and regualtions,
Provide warning signage, caution tape, and secure areas where safety has a risky exposure.
The project site should have one employee or personnel responsible for safety. The person should perform safety walk-thrus and visits as often as possible and on a daily or hourly bases.

Follow the safety rules established by your employer and the General Contractor, the rules are there to protect you and your fellow workers. Do not compromise your safety for anyone and when you see unsafe acts or issues report immediately.

Henry pretty much covered it! To that, I would add, Stay Alert! Always be listening and looking. Don't do anything that would create a safety hazard for someone else. Use spotters if you need to.
Aside from the risk to life and limb, Safety/workplace accidents are very costly to construction companies. Any violation of safety rules is grounds for immediate termination. If you are working someplace that does not place a high emphasis on safety, look for another job. You want to know that your employer is doing everything possible to ensure your safety and that of your co-workers.
good question!
