Jenn’s Answer

Oftentimes coaches are hired based on former playing experience in that sport as well as their work experience (internships or previous coaching jobs). If you want to coach at a school (whether high school or college), a college degree is important, but the type of degree or major is usually less important than having relevant work experience and proving yourself as someone who is knowledgeable about your sport (through playing and/or coaching).

George’s Answer

Former professional players often have a fast track to professional coaching opportunities. That said though many professional coaches were not professionals and that sport but it took a longer career track to get there. Most professional coaches have a College Degree along with a coaching minor. Many young coaches start out at Middle School or High school programs and work up through community colleges, Division III, than II, than I, than up to the professional level so it is not usually a fast track, although coaching at the professional level is certainly more glamorous and higher paying, coaching at the lower levels is every bit as much rewarding if not more..
