Joseph’s Answer

I've worked alongside construction works and spoken to several site workers. They tell me the big push at the moment is to encourage a safety-orientated attitude and mindset - site workers are expected to think about how they should be working to be as safe as possible.

However, in conversations I've had with many site workers, what they're really thinking about is when they can stop for tea breaks and how long before their shift finishes. Some do really enjoy the work, but for others, it can be boring and is just what they do to earn a living. Some enjoy being outdoors and getting involved hands-on, others complain about the weather and would rather be inside. I also gather if you're the sort of person that can take pride in your work, the satisfaction of seeing something you've built finally completed can be a huge boost; but not everyone has that attitude either.

All in all, it depends on the individual.

As a construction worker you are thinking how to perform effectively and safely. You have to deal with stress and long hours sometimes and that increases the chances of mistakes and accidents so being calm and focused is a must. Some people take the job very seriously while others are really laidback, in my opinion you have to balance according to the situation, there are times you need to get serious while some other days might be slower and allow you to relax.
