Josette’s Answer

There's no one answer. It depends on your education, years of experience and specific industry. The earning potential for chefs is wide open. You definitely have to work your way up. I wish I could give you a more definitive answer. There are also different levels of chefs. Sous Chef, Executive Chef, Personal Chef, Pastry Chef, Executive Sous Chef, Chef de Commis, School Chef, Healthcare Chef, Research and Development Chef, etc.

Robert’s Answer

A Sous Chef at a fine dining steakhouse might make $45k-$55k per year salary. Thats working 5 11+ hour days. 55 hours per week. The 40 hour work week is not valued in the restaurant industry. You could expect an hourly rate as a line cook anywhere from 10-18 per hour. You would need a lot of experience and to be at the right place geographically to make the top end of that range. An executive chef, or Food and beverage manager might make $70-$90k+ annual salary... it takes several years to reach such a level though. Check out the help wanteds and see what salary places are paying in your area. It is possible to make a decent living as a Chef but you have to be smart about your career path, plus it is a lot of hard work along the way.
