Narina’s Answer

Hi Oscar, this is a very good thing to be thinking about. There are often times in life when we come across challenges and boundaries and we feel down and helpless and unsure of how can we keep going. It might be something at home, at school, in your social network group that make you feel overwhelmed and not ready to continue. In these cases there are multiple options that you can try to help yourself and and those around you. First of all set up achievable goals and try to have realistic expectations. In most cases when we fell like giving up it means that we didn't achieve what we originally planned or didn't get to where we wanted to be. If from the beginning you would set up a goal that is a little easier to achieve but still motivational and challenging you would be less prone to giving up. The example of this could be instead of aiming to graduate school with all "A" and go to Harvard you may be focusing on the subject that you are currently studying this year and succeed in that, leaving the worries of the future for later. This is leading us to the next step - stop worry about future so much. A lot of young people experience a lot of pressure from family and society in general to succeed and accomplish certain things - career, house, car. Thoughts like that could lead you to an early and unnecessary disappointment. Things come in life slowly and if you are been patient and work hard it will all happen for you. Reducing a stress is a very good thing to help you move forward and not give up. And finally, if you feel like give up going through a tough situation always remember that there are benefits from sharing how you feeling and asking for help. Talking to your friends or family members, posting something online and finding support groups. I hope this help a little. Thank you and good luck to you!

Hi Oscar,
What a great life question and responses from Narina and Victor. Most everyone will experience the feeling to want to give up in something at some point in our lives; work, relationship, sports or other activities. Spend some time to focus on why you may be feeling this way:

1. Understand why you feel you want to give up--Are you feeling overwhelmed, confused, exhausted? Maybe you could give yourself some free time to do whatever makes you happy. Therapy could also help by talking with someone about your feelings and getting them off your chest. Maybe you keep pushing and trying a method that is not that successful for you and you need to try another approach or have a different mindset about the issue you are tackling.
2. Is the feeling of giving up specific to a short-term situation or is it chronic (continues over a long period of time)? Understand that tough circumstances are temporary and not forever, but they can definitely feel like they will last forever! These situations tend to make us grow by putting us in uncomfortable situations.
3. Try to approach your circumstance on what you can do (Narina's beautiful response); a strengths-based perspective about what you are learning and how you are growing through adversity. Break up large tasks into smaller steps you can manage.
4. Giving up is not necessarily a bad thing especially if you truly believe the work, relationship, etc is actually harmful but understand the next steps and have a plan before you do.

All the best!
