Tracy,

If your passion is in patient treatment, my advice would be to shadow different types of medical professionals. The medical aspect of healthcare is extremely hands-on and the best way to know if this is the correct healthcare area for you is to see it in real life. Visit a family doctor, dentist, nurse, or surgeon that would allow you to shadow one day of their day-to-day professional activities. For example, medical doctors and dentist tend to have a different type of patient interaction and very different lifestyles, while having very similar incomes. By shadowing these professionals, you will be able to identify which lifestyle and patient interaction fits your personality the best.

This field is also formed by so many other incredibly important positions. When I graduated high school, I knew I wanted to be in the health field because of the job security aspect, but also felt driven to business management. We don’t recognize the intensive and diverse work opportunities available behind the scenes of the healthcare field. If you also find interest in other non-patientcare professions such as, administration, IT, quality process improvement, HR, project management, etc., they can tremendously expand your career opportunity. For example, I have a degree in Health Services Administration and currently work as a Process Improvement analyst for a health insurance company. This role has also given me experience in project and product management which allows me to work in so many different areas of the constantly changing healthcare field.

I hope this helped and good luck!

Hi Tracey great question! The healthcare industry is a rewarding career path and has endless opportunities for growth in success. When most people think of the medical field they immediately think of emts, nurses, physicians, and surgeons. However, the healthcare industry consists of vast roles that include both hands on patient care and behind the scenes careers that can be extremely rewarding.

I suggest meeting with your school counselor and discussing what opportunities might be available to your while you're still in school. May high schools offer courses at Career Technical Centers that will allow you to learn basic patient care and could even offer college credits into nursing programs and degrees.

If you were thinking about more of an administration level position you could always look into healthcare management courses available at your community colleges or internships at local hospitals and insurance companies.

Good luck and follow your dreams!

The health care industry is rewarding and forever expanding. I think the best piece of advice would be to advise you to research the career path of your choice. I think there are so many avenues you can go in health care industry. A lot of folks aren't aware or all the options that are available such as working in the claims areas of insurance companies, or working as case workers etc. Simply do your best researching so you can select the career path of your dreams.
