Hi Garvin,
I think that if you're looking for a job to make money on the side, then working a minimum wage job in the food or service industry is good because I feel like it teaches you life skills and people skills and also how to deal with difficult customers. I also feel like it makes you a better customer because you then know what it feels like to be a worker. I've worked in the food, service, and retail industry before, and I would have to say retail is by far the worst because customers tend to be the rudest.
If you're looking for a job that's related to what you want to study in school or a career, then I would recommend an internship. If you're currently a senior, then you might not have that much experience yet, so it will be harder to find an internship that will accept you. However, if you can find even an unpaid internship it will be good for you to get that experience and add it to your resume.
Best of luck!

Thanks for your question! I would say if you don’t have a clear idea of a certain industry or area of study that you’re going to pursue in the future then you have a handful of jobs you could do. I would look for jobs that have skills that are translatable, for example when you work in a retail environment you get exposure to internal corporate guidelines and interacting with people. This type of job would give you skills which can help you professionally and socially later on in life. Definitely take some time and think about what types of skills you want for the future and find entry level jobs that align with that. Hope this helps!

Hi Garvin,
My advice mirrors the other two. I think that for a first job, you should find something that will give you basic skills that will help you as you decide on a career path. For example, a job as a retailer or server can give you social skills, it will allow you to manage tasks, it shows that you are hardworking, and that you know how to collaborate with a team. I knew early on in college that I wanted to be an accountant/finance professional. Prior to this realization, I had owned and operated a small lawn care company. The two jobs have nothing in common at first glance, but after deeper consideration,I could prove that I collaborated with a team, I managed a budget, I accountanted for income and expenses, that I was hardworking, and I worked on social skills via customer service. These are things that I would consider as you look for your first job out of high school. Your first job will be stepping stone as you look to build out your resume.
