I've served thousands of hours in dozens of cities in the U.S., but nothing compared to my recent experience digging a well and connecting with individuals and families in Guatemala. My advice is to prepare by thinking through what you expect to give and get from the trip and become familiar with the language, knowing a little goes a long way. Your life is likely to change as a result of volunteering abroad and afterward, you'll always have an experience worth talking about.</span>

I would say yes, it is definitely worthwhile to volunteer or study abroad. Not only will you be doing some good (volunteering), you will be broadening your experiences and gaining critical independence and a more global, multi-cultural outlook. All of this is critical in today's global world. I spent 2 years studying abroad and never once regretted it.
