Any college/university with an ABET accredited engineering program will ensure that you get a good education.

Beyond that, I would recommend attending a school that has a career services office that will help you get an internship while in college and help you get a job after college. Do not even think about graduating without work experience. I would recommend one year of work experience minimum.

Lastly, I would recommed you purchase a subscription to US News and World Reports. They have really good rankings and information about colleges that can help you make a well informed choice.

Simon’s Answer

There are many good accredited 4-5 year schools and universities available. To keep cost down, I would first investigate public universities within your state. I have hired many engineers and any of the "well-known" schools produces good engineers. As far as I have seen, an MIT graduate is not a better engineer than one from Auburn or Iowa. Southern Methodist, University of North Texas and UT Arlington are good schools around you. It will be up to you to take good classes and study hard. To get a jump on the rest of the graduates, be sure to work as an intern or work as an engineer assistant of some sort during your last two years of school. Engineers are problem solvers, so be sure to hone your analysis skills and solution development during your schooling. Teamwork and communications (written and oral) are also very valuable skills.
Good luck Tristan in you endeavors.
